Battery Through the Years, and By the Numbers

One hundred and eleven active portfolio companies. Ten general partners—hailing from four continents—with an average tenure in the job of 12 years.* Deals done across the U.S., Canada, Israel and Europe.

And now, a new set of funds–Battery Ventures XII and XII Side Fund–capitalized at a combined $1.25 billion.

It’s a lot to digest, but there are plenty of numbers to quantify the depth of global activity and experience at Battery, an investment firm that has been around since 1983. The firm invests in technology companies of all sizes, ranging from seed- and early-stage companies all the way up to majority-ownership transactions exceeding $100 million. Areas of focus include business software; Web/IT infrastructure; consumer Internet and mobile; and industrial technology.

Battery, which was founded in Boston but now operates out of five global offices, has grown through up-and-down market cycles and various technology trends, from the rise of the smartphone and application software to the shift toward off-premise, cloud computing and agile software development. Battery has recently invested in companies making technology for purposes as varied as advanced data analysis in corporate datacenters, leveraging artificial intelligence, to on-demand dog walking.

Since its inception, the firm has made a total of 385 investments, excluding seed deals, resulting in 59 initial-public stock offerings and 154 M&A events.*

Here’s a graphical look at Battery by the numbers, and through the years:
