Five Questions in Five Minutes with the CEO of Collibra

Portfolio Spotlight: Felix Van de Maele, CEO of Collibra

Each month, Battery  highlights a different portfolio-company CEO with our “Five Questions in Five Minutes” feature, showcasing the diversity of the Battery portfolio across investment stages, sectors and geographies.

What does your company do in 10 words or less?

Collibra is the leader in enterprise data governance and catalog software.

What is your favorite piece of management/leadership advice?

Lead by example.

What’s the most under-rated trend in technology, in your opinion?

I’d say it’s the ongoing “consumerization” of business technology. We’ve all become accustomed to how platforms like Amazon help us easily and quickly search for and find products in our everyday lives. But users are increasingly demanding this same ease of use in their business technology tools, as well.

Collibra provides that kind of “Amazon-ified” approach to helping data citizens – the people in an enterprise who need to find data to do their jobs – quickly find and use that data, while ensuring the quality of that data can be trusted.

What recent Collibra accomplishment (in the last year) are you most proud of?

I’m, of course, very proud of the more than $108 million in Series C and Series D funding Collibra has secured in just a little more than a year. The fact that venture capital firms like Battery Ventures have invested in Collibra speaks volumes to both their confidence in us and in their outlook for the ongoing rapid growth of data governance as an enterprise technology category.

I’m also incredibly proud of the fast-growing team Collibra has recruited and assembled – attracting some of the world’s top talent in engineering, sales, marketing, customer success, professional services, and other key functions in our offices across the globe.

But most of all, I’m proud of the customers that we have been able to partner with. We are truly helping them drive change in their businesses, and helping them become more data-driven and data literate. That’s just very exciting.

What non-business book most deeply impacted your life?

Hard to pick, but if I have to, I’d say A Brief History of Time from Stephen Hawking. I love how it helps you put everything in perspective, and makes you wonder about the truly big questions in life.
