Five Questions in Five Minutes with the CEO of Clubessential

Portfolio Spotlight: Randy Eckels, CEO of Clubessential*

Each month, Battery highlights a different portfolio-company CEO with our “Five Questions in Five Minutes” feature, showcasing the diversity of the Battery portfolio across investment stages, sectors and geographies.

What does your company do in 10 words or less?

We are leaders in membership management software platforms delivering #member4life.

What is your favorite piece of management/leadership advice?

“See a problem, fix it!” This advice was instilled in me from a young age by observing my father’s approach to life. He always encouraged me to invest time in thinking through the nature of a problem before attempting to come up with a solution.

What’s the most under-rated trend in technology, in your opinion?

The concept of ubiquitous computing and “anything as a service” capabilities are going to have profound impacts on our everyday lives. Always-on, always-available, limitless infrastructure environments are supporting new business models for solving complex problems.

What Clubessential accomplishment in the last 12 months are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the talented leadership team we’ve attracted to help navigate and integrate five company acquisitions in three separate vertical markets: private clubs, fitness boutique clubs, and college athletics. We’ve tripled the size of our company to 6,000+ clients in just over 12 months’ time, thanks to our nearly 300 passionate employees who work tirelessly to help our clients succeed. I’m also proud of the incredible partnership we’ve built with our Battery Venture colleagues in driving the strategic direction, investments and early success of our membership management SaaS platform company.

BONUS QUESTION: What is a movie you never get tired of watching?

I never tire of watching any one of Robin Williams’ movies, but my all-time favorite is Dead Poets Society. So many life and leadership lessons are brought to vivid color in a two-hour inspiring film. Carpe Diem! I used this Latin phrase, for seize the day, as my personalized vehicle license plate for a few years after first watching this film.
