Situation

  • Founding team of 3 — a visionary, a technologist and a cable executive – defined the technical architecture to enable a revolution in TV viewership: “on-demand” TV
  • Battery’s investment resulted from systematic approach to investing in cable value chain:  including high speed data equipment provider (River Delta – acquired by Motorola), a ground infrastructure player (Aurora Networks – acquired by Six Degrees Group), and a telephony solution (Cedar Point – acquired by Genband)
  • Led the Series A financing along with second venture investor

The Battery Difference

  • Recruited the complete management team, a high-powered Advisory Board, and two independent Directors, all of whom remained with the company
  • Guided strategic decision to build additional development team in Beijing, streamlining development time and costs
  • In “post-bubble” market, supported team in their drive to execute extremely efficiently and cost-effectively

Result

  • In short order, proved the architecture could work in both cable and IPTV environments, and was deployed with all major North American and International MSOs
  • Within 4 years of the entrepreneurs’ initial vision, emerged as de facto leader in next generation on-demand server platforms
  • Acquired by Motorola for a substantial return on Battery’s initial investment
