Deval Patrick, governor of Massachusetts, led an “innovation mission” to Israel in late May that included over 100 leaders in industry and academia. One stop was a breakfast at Battery Ventures’ office in Herzliya, at which the governor spoke with leading local venture capitalists and entrepreneurs about the growing ties between innovative Israeli companies in Massachusetts.

The breakfast—co-hosted by Battery General Partner Scott Tobin and Globespan Capital Partners Managing Director Jonathan Seelig—highlighted Battery’s own Massachusetts/Israel connection: Battery, which was founded in Boston, opened its first Israel office in 2005. Now, it operates a robust investment practice there, with a staff of eight and 15 current portfolio companies, including many with ties to the Bay State.

Zerto CEO Ziv Kedem, for instance, recently wrote a blog post for the Wall Street Journal about Zerto’s move to open an office into Massachusetts.  Like Zerto, a number of other Israeli companies have chosen Boston as their U.S. base, including PowerInbox and Pursway.

A recent study by the New England-Israel Business Council found that Israeli-founded companies in Massachusetts booked $6.2 billion in revenue in the state in 2012 and employed nearly 6,700 people. The study also found that the growth rate of Israeli companies in Massachusetts is five times that of the Massachusetts economy as a whole.
