Former Portfolio Company Executive Joins Team to Pursue Opportunities in Optimization Software
WALTHAM, MA and MENLO PARK, CA; March 20, 2007 – Battery Ventures, a venture capital and private equity firm focused on investing in technology and innovation worldwide, today announced the addition of Tom Ebling as an Executive-in-Residence (EIR) to its Boston-area team. Ebling was most recently the Chairman and CEO of former Battery portfolio company ProfitLogic, a retail software optimization company acquired by Oracle. He also spent 18 years in a variety of executive roles at another successful Battery company, Marcam Solutions (IPO). Ebling will work closely with the Battery investment team to identify, evaluate and eventually participate in opportunities in the software sector.
“The Battery team and I are very open-minded, because there is so much still to be done with software,” said Ebling. “Consider all the data that companies have collected, especially in consumer-focused and insight-driven industries such as retail and financial services. Think about the myriad business insights that can be gleaned from that data to improve the bottom line. Combine that with the amount of computing power available and the new ‘on-demand’ ways you can deliver applications. That’s a powerful recipe for breakthrough technologies that can bring extremely high value to a large number of customers. Battery has an enviable history of backing winners in the software space, and I’m looking forward to finding the next big thing with them.”
Battery’s previous software portfolio companies include winners such as: Akamai Technologies (IPO), Chordiant Software (IPO), Concord Communications (IPO), Corillian Corporation (IPO), HNC Software, Inc. (IPO), Marcam Solutions (IPO), ProfitLogic (sold to Oracle), Vastera, Inc. (IPO), and Witness Systems (IPO). The firm’s current portfolio ranges from early stage through private equity deals, and includes: BladeLogic, Consona (formerly Made2Manage Systems), OutlookSoft, and Omniture (IPO).
“We’re lucky to continue our long-standing association with Tom,” said Dave Tabors, Battery Ventures General Partner. “He has more than 20 years of software experience and success, and has mastered the ability to instill repeatable product and business processes to fuel growth. Together, we see a lot of opportunity in new areas, particularly where software and analytics meet. Tom would be a terrific catalyst for any team, whether it’s a couple of entrepreneurs with a great idea, or a more established company looking for accelerated and sustainable growth.”
With 20 years of experience in business management and software development, Tom Ebling has earned a reputation for driving growth and delivering shareholder value. Most recently, Tom was the Chairman and CEO of ProfitLogic, a leading provider of Merchandise Optimization solutions for retailers. The company was acquired by Oracle as a cornerstone of its retail strategy. Before ProfitLogic, he served as CEO of Torrent Systems, a data warehousing infrastructure software company (acquired by Ascential Software). Prior to his tenure at Torrent, Tom was employee number three at Marcam Solutions, which he helped to grow through a successful IPO to become a $200 million company. Over his 18 years there, he played a key role in every part of the business, culminating in a role as Executive Vice President of Customer Operations.
Tom currently serves as a Director on the boards of software companies VFA (www.vfa.com), Demandware (www.demandware.com), NeoSaej (www.neosaej.com), and Akoya, Inc. (www.akoyainc.com).
Since 1983, Battery has been investing in technology and innovation worldwide. The firm partners with entrepreneurs and management teams across technology sectors, geographies and stages of a company’s life, from start-up and expansion financing, to growth equity and buyouts.
Battery has supported many breakthrough companies around the world, including: Airespace (acquired by Cisco), Akamai Technologies (AKAM), Cbeyond (CBEY), LIFFE (acquired by Euronext), Neoteris (acquired by NetScreen), and SigmaTel (SGTL). Its current portfolio includes emerging firms such as Advent Solar, Lion Cells, Netezza, Spot Runner, and Tejas Networks, as well as more established companies such as ITA Software, Consona (formerly Made2Manage), MetroPCS, and Nova Analytics.
