The
Overlooked Opportunity in B2B: Collaboration in the Design Space
By
Ken Elefant, San Mateo,
CA
Ariba
and CommerceOne are the leaders in procuring a Bill of Materials
(BOM), Agile is a leader of managing a complex BOM, but who is the
leader of creating a BOM? CAD and PDM vendors partake in parts of
this process, but no vendor has created a solution that allows collaboration
between disparate members of the supply chain for the creation of
the BOM. In this article, we investigate the different players in
the market and highlight the current holes in the marketplace. Please

Who's
Arming the Sell Side?
By
Madhu Tadikonda, San Mateo,
CA
Until
recently, the "buy-side" of e-commerce held the spotlight, with
stars Ariba and Commerce One at center stage. Now, market interest
in the long-neglected "sell-side" of e-commerce has been increasing,
as numerous firms are vying to help bring suppliers on-line. Finding
attractive investment opportunities in this complex and confusing
market requires creative insight. Please

The
Next Generation CSO
By Neeraj
Agrawal , Wellesley, MA
A
confluence of factors is driving a renewed emphasis on information
security. Many Global 2000 corporations are expanding security budgets
and empowering a focused executive, the Chief Security Officer,
to manage this mission-critical area. Savvy start-ups will take
advantage of this macro trend and deliver creative products and
services targeted to this high-growth sector. Please

In
January 2001, Battery invested $8MM out of a $13MM round in
OpenCola.
OpenCola is a peer-to-peer software company that has produced
a revolutionary distributed search technology called OpenCola
Smart Folders. This application is based on a platform and
protocol invented by OpenCola, and it runs on Linux and Windows.
Version 1.0 of OpenCola Smart Folders will be released at
the O'Reilly Peer-to-Peer conference, which will be held in
San Francisco February 14 through 16, 2001. For more information,
contact Larry Cheng at larry@battery.com.

In November 2000, Battery Ventures and Charles River Ventures co-led
a $15MM round of financing in Ximian
(formerly known as Helix Code). Ximian is leading the development
of the GNOME project, a graphical desktop environment for Linux and
UNIX platforms. The company is also leading the development of Evolution,
an integrated mail, calendar and contact manager; and Red Carpet,
a graphical software updating system that makes it easy for Linux
and Unix desktop users to maintain the software on their desktop.
Ximian will be marketing a suite of Internet-based services to their
users. Scott Tobin from Battery Ventures and Ted Dintersmith from
Charles River Ventures have joined the Board of Directors of Ximian.

Battery's
Foray into Peer-to-Peer
Over
a year ago, Battery Ventures embarked on a substantial effort to
understand the emergence of peer networks and distributed computing.
Over that time, in typical Battery fashion, we've seen over 100
companies in this space. We are pleased to announce that that effort
has culminated in an investment in OpenCola. We are leading a $13MM
Series B investment round with Mosaic Ventures (Series A investor)
and Torstar Corporation, owner of Harlequin Books and other leading
media properties. OpenCola is a peer-to-peer software company with
offices in San Francisco and Toronto. OpenCola employs more than
50 people. We recently sat down with Grad Conn, CEO of OpenCola,
to hear him tell the OpenCola story. Please
